About Biotech iQ

My mission at Biotech iQ is to identify biotech companies that offer an attractive long-term risk-adjusted return (RAR) and the potential for long-term value creation. I tend to focus on small to mid-cap companies ranging from late-stage clinical to early commercial, which is where I usually find the most attractive RARs. Occasionally, I may cover earlier clinical-stage companies if they demonstrate key elements of derisking. If I find a company interesting but it doesn't yet meet my derisking criteria, I may add it to the Biotech iQ Watch List until the proper derisking elements are in place. My focus is always on the long-term story while also identifying near-term risks, milestones, and momentum.

Over the past two decades as a biotech investor, I have developed a unique analytical framework that helps me carefully evaluate clinical and commercial-stage biotech companies to uncover and identify strengths, weaknesses, key risks, and long-term potential. My iQ Cheat Sheets (iQCS) are the embodiment of this framework.

In addition to articles and updates, I publish an iQCS for each company I cover. iQ Cheat Sheets are "living reports" in which I capture as many relevant aspects of a company as possible, provide qualitative and quantitative analysis, and develop a near-term and long-term outlook. Biotech companies are very dynamic, with the story often changing with each new press release, so iQ Cheat Sheets are continuously updated as the story evolves. Please see the article Anatomy of an iQ Cheat Sheet in the Resources section of this website to learn more about iQ Cheat Sheets.

Why Did I Start Biotech iQ?

I get asked this question a lot. I've been a biotech investor for over two decades. I was initially attracted to biotech because it combines two things I love: science and business. I don't know any other sector of investing that relies so heavily on these two skill sets. Biotech is also interesting to me because it sits at the crossroads of innovation and practical application. The therapies developed by today's biotech companies have the potential to directly impact the lives of patients and their families in profound and meaningful ways, not in 10 years or 5 years, but quite often almost immediately. I think that's exciting. Biotech also offers the opportunity for outsized gains--but the path isn't easy.

For the first few years of my biotech investing, I made all the mistakes that so many biotech investors make. I invested too early or too late, lacked patience, tried to follow the "hot" stock everyone was talking about, ignored risks, or fell in love with the science while ignoring the business case. I had some spectacular wins that kept me hooked, but it wasn't consistent. It was a roller coaster. I'm glad I survived that period relatively unscathed, but many other investors I knew weren't as lucky.

Over time, and with much trial and error, I developed better habits and methodologies that helped me avoid the worst mistakes and become more consistent in my win/loss ratio. This eventually led to creating my own unique framework that allows me to carefully and consistently analyze biotech companies and identify ones that offer favorable risk-adjusted returns, or RAR. This framework is what I've tried to capture in my iQ Cheat Sheets and is what has allowed me to remain consistent in my biotech investing.

My goal, or hope, with Biotech iQ is to demystify biotech, and help Biotech iQ subscribers of all experience levels avoid some of the mistakes I've made--and hopefully profit from this most rewarding area of endless innovation.

What To Expect From Biotech iQ

I describe Biotech iQ as an investing and information service focused on identifying small to mid-cap biotech companies that offer favorable risk-adjusted returns (RAR) and have a high probability of success and long-term value creation. I go where the analysis leads me, and it often leads me to under-the-radar names that have fallen out of favor for various reasons but still offer the potential for outsized gains.

Some of the many factors I pay close attention to are valuation, sustainability, and the value of a company's clinical or commercial assets. I try to find deeply undervalued companies, which often brands me as a "contrarian investor", but I don't see it that way. I'm just focusing on relatively derisked companies that I think have the best potential for outsized returns--and those usually aren't the "hot" stocks the market is chasing. Many of my biggest wins have been with companies the market was overlooking when I entered, only to become market darlings by the time I exited (though some I continue to hold if I feel the long-term story is still constructive.)

Since many of the companies I focus on tend to be "under-the-radar", it sometimes takes time for the market to recognize the value proposition--which, in turn, often requires some patience on the part of the investor. Biotech iQ is not a high-volume trading site, and I don't provide trading advice or recommendations. What I do provide is deep analysis to identify the most promising long-term stories, and regular subscriber updates as the story develops. Updates are sent to subscribers in real-time via email and documented in the iQ Cheat Sheets for future review.

Some of the other tools and services I provide are:

  • The Biotech iQ Ratings Card, which provides my most current Buy, Sell, or Hold ratings for covered companies.
  • Notifications of notable market or company events that may be relevant to the companies I cover.
  • Notifications of my trades in core positions in companies I cover here at Biotech iQ.
  • A Catalyst Tracker to track upcoming catalysts.
  • An Events Calendar to track upcoming significant company events.
  • A detailed iQ Cheat Sheet, which is regularly updated, for each company that is actively covered at Biotech iQ.
